WEST COVINA HIGH SCHOOL WELCOMES BACK SUPERBOWL CHAMPION WALTER THURMOND III TO RETIRE HIS JERSEY
West Covina, CA - West Covina High School has been included in the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll community where they received a Golden Football for each student who has gone on to play and win in a Super Bowl. West Covina High School was presented with two of these awards for players, Walter Thurmond III (2014 Seattle Seahawks) and Derek Tennel (1993 Dallas Cowboys). On Friday, April 22, West Covina High School welcomed back Thurmond and retired his high school football jersey (#3).
Walter Thurmond III, a WCHS 2005 graduate, was on the 2004 CIF championship football team. He went on to play for the University of Oregon and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks. He was on their Super Bowl championship team in 2014 and is currently with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“It’s great to have Walter back on campus” stated dean of students, Lisa Maggiore.
“What has impressed me the most about him is that he made sure to get his college degree, and even continued on to get his masters. He’s even a filmmaker. I love that about him.” Thurmond was happy to return to campus and spend time with his former coaches, and he made sure to give his fellow Bulldogs some words of encouragement, “Every one of you sitting here is great at something. You’re better than anyone else at that one thing. Go find out what that is, and be the best.” The students met his words with thunderous applause.
