West Covina Unified School District is committed to providing educational excellence and access to high quality, well-rounded curriculum for all students. We designed our professional development initiative to maximize each teacher’s capacity to inspire students to participate in post-secondary or career activities, become critical thinkers and problem solvers, and prepare them to provide positive contributions to society.
Our Focus
Our professional development program is research-based and integrated into our existing programs to align with the expectations of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Our district’s strategic plan identifies our core focus of:
- Literacy
- Writing
- Technology
- Active Citizenship
- STEM Education
Within each of these areas, our professional development participants learn to integrate 21st century skills, Common Core standards, and student engagement strategies to prepare our students to be college and career ready. We developed our workshops, seminars, and training modules using National Staff Development standards to promote:
- Learning Communities and Collaboration
- Leadership
- Data-driven Priorities and Decisions
- Evaluation and Reflection
- Research-based Strategies
- Learning Theory Implementation
- Equity and Access to Rigorous Instruction
- Quality Teaching
- Family Involvement
Our Opportunities
To further support teachers as life-long learners, West Covina Unified School District offers these practical workshops and personalized support:
Developing 21st Century Skills
Designed to help teachers make purposeful connections between technology and instruction, participants in this workshop will learn to use technology as an instructional tool to deliver lessons that maximize instructional time, engage an increasingly diverse student body, and facilitate the acquisition of 21st century skills.
Common Core Standards
West Covina has been working to implement Common Core into our classrooms curriculum to help our students be better prepared for college and career. The state website offers several learning modules for you to take advantage of at your convenience. We encourage you to do so, and keep watching your inbox for information on our upcoming events.
